Film highlighting Powley case will play at Sault Film Festival on Sunday

The Powley Documentary: The Hunt for Justice plays at the Sault Film Festival on Sunday, Dec. 1

A film being shown on Sunday includes archival footage from a landmark court cased based out of Sault Ste. Marie.

The Powley case affirmed Métis identity and rights as Indigenous peoples under Section 35 of the Canadian Constitution.

Featuring archival footage and interviews with Métis citizens from Sault Ste. Marie, plus new research and commentary by trial judges, current leaders, and others involved in the case, The Powley Documentary: The Hunt for Justice tells the story of the legacy the Powley’s decision to challenge the Canadian government has left on the Métis Nation.

“Directing The Powley Documentary: The Hunt for Justice was an honour and a responsibility to share the story of Steve and Roddy Powley’s historic fight for Métis harvesting rights,” says filmmaker Matt Lemay of Indigenous Geographic in a media release.

“Through this film, we aimed to capture the personal sacrifices, cultural significance, and enduring impact of the Powley Case, offering a tribute to the resilience of the Métis Nation and inspiring continued efforts toward recognition and justice.”

As for members of the local Métis communities' response to the release of the film at the festival, Métis Nation of Ontario Regional Councilor Mitch Case is encouraging members of the community to attend this weekend’s screening.

“The Sault Ste. Marie Métis community is extremely proud to be the home of the landmark Powley Decision,” says Case.

“With Métis denialism on the rise, it is more important than ever to tell our stories. Every Métis citizen, especially our youth, should watch this documentary and take pride in the determination and resilience of our communities.”

The Powley Documentary: The Hunt for Justice plays at the Sault Film Festival on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m.
