1 arrested after vehicle stolen, businesses robbed New Year's Day

One person has been arrested after a vehicle was stolen and two west-end businesses were robbed on New Year’s Day.

The three incidents occurred within a 30 minute window, says a news release from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

The accused, 25-year-old Sam Stevens, was located and arrested yesterday afternoon.

Full text of the news release follows:

On Jan. 2, 2023, officers with Patrol Services charged 25-year-old Sam Stevens with robbery and theft of a motor vehicle.

On Jan. 1, 2023 around 5:30 p.m., police were notified of a vehicle stolen from a residence in the 200 block of Terrance Avenue.

Around 5:45 p.m. police were notified of a robbery at a business in the 0-100 block of Second Line West, where the suspect attended the business and demanded money from employees. The suspect was given a quantity of cash and fled the area.

Around 6 p.m. police were notified of a robbery at a business in the 600 block of Second Line West, where the suspect attended the business and demanded money. The suspect was given a quantity of cash and fled the area.

The suspect of the robberies matched the description of the person who stole the vehicle.

Around 6:50 p.m. officers observed the stolen vehicle on Henrietta Avenue. When police were noticed, the driver made dangerous and erratic maneuvers to evade police.

Through the investigation, officers identified the accused as the person involved in the three incidents. On Jan. 2, 2023 around 2:45 p.m., police located the accused and they were arrested.

The accused is charged with:
    •    Theft of motor vehicle
    •    Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
    •    Dangerous operation
    •    Robbery x2

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 8, 2023.
