The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service has reinstated its auxiliary unit. The previous group of auxiliary constables was active from 2018-2020, but put on hold during the pandemic.

“Volunteering as an auxiliary constable is a great way to serve your community,” said Corporate Development and Emergency Management Insp. Ben Bolduc, in a news release. “Several former members of our auxiliary unit have since been hired as police constables, which demonstrates the value of the experiential learning offered by our auxiliary program.”

Auxiliary constables support Sault police in many ways, such as assisting with community festivals, parades, street parties and sporting events. They can also ride along in police cruisers with officers to see how they answer emergency calls for service in our community, the release added.

“Through their volunteer work, auxiliary members gain unique insight into the world of policing,” said Chief of Police Hugh Stevenson. “Re-instating the program is something we wanted to do for some time, and we are proud of the six new auxiliary constables joining the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.”

Returning auxiliary member Dalaina Orr will serve as the unit's sergeant, providing leadership and guidance for the team.

The new auxiliary constables were sworn in at a ceremony at the Police Services Building on Jan. 22.
