The Algoma District School Board is confirming that an airsoft gun was recently brought to a local elementary school by a student.

Some parents have taken to social media to express frustrations they had to find out about the incident from their own children.

In an ADSB statement sent to SooToday on Wednesday, it confirmed an airsoft gun was brought to a school, but the date and location were not disclosed.

"Staff took immediate action as soon as they became aware. No weapon is ever permitted on school property or school transportation. Policies and procedures related to safe schools are in place and were followed," said ADSB in the statement.

Airsoft guns are low-powered replicas used for recreation and training. They fire plastic or resin balls and airsoft players wear protective equipment while using them.

A letter was sent to parents of students at H.M. Robbins Public School on Wednesday with more details than were provided by the board to media, confirming the incident happened at the school and that police attended at the time of the incident.

Although the incident occurred last week the letter was not sent to parents until June 2.

"This is an opportunity to remind parents and students that we take safety at our schools seriously. Please speak with your children about never bringing a weapon to school, real or otherwise, and the consequences involved.  We have clear requirements for considering suspension, expulsion and/or reporting to police," said the release from ADSB and the letter from H.M. Robbins principal, Natasha Court.

Court went on to say a school counsellor is available for children who may have become upset or anxious by the incident.
