Arrest made in September crash that damaged Wellington West home

A house on the corner of Wellington Street West and Henrietta Avenue is left with severe damage after a car drove into the home on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2022.

A driver has been charged with impaired driving after a vehicle struck a home on Wellington Street West on Sept. 20, causing extensive damage to the residence.

SooToday reporter Alex Flood reported from the crash scene that damage to the lower portion of the home was so extensive that the inside of the basement could be seen from across the street.

Following an investigation, officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service located and arrested 28-year-old Jonathan Thompson this morning.

Full text of a news release regarding this incident follows:

On Oct. 20, 2022, officers with Patrol Services charged 28-year-old Jonathan Thompson with operation while impaired – alcohol and/or drug.

On Sept. 20, 2022, officers responded to a motor vehicle collision in the 600 block of Wellington Street West. Upon arrival, officers observed a vehicle that had struck a residence and caused significant damage to the property. The accused was the lone occupant of the vehicle and had to be extricated then transported to hospital for treatment.

Through the investigation officers developed grounds to believe the accused’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol. A warrant was requested and issued for the accused.

On Oct. 20, 2022 the accused was arrested. While executing the arrest, [it is alleged that] the accused repeatedly resisted. Officers gained control of the accused and they were arrested.

The accused is charged with:
    •    Operation while impaired – alcohol and/or drug
    •    Dangerous operation
    •    Obstruct peace officer

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 9, 2023.
