Door-to-door canvassers from UNICEF Canada are in Sault Ste. Marie until Sept. 3, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service says.

While the fundraising effort is legitimate, police are still advising residents to check for ID and be cautious when they answer that knock on the door.

"Sault Police are aware of the canvassers’ presence in our community and have confirmed their legitimacy with UNICEF Canada," police said in a news release.

The police noted that canvassing started Aug. 28.

"Door-to-door canvassers wear photo ID badges that clearly identify them as canvassing on behalf of UNICEF Canada," police said.

The canvassers may knock on your door and ask you to donate to their charity using UNICEF Canada Donor forms.

"We recommend that community members exercise caution when making donations to door-to-door canvassers," police added. "Be sure to check that they are wearing a valid photo ID badge and that they are using legitimate forms."
