Assault victim taken to hospital with serious injuries: police

Following a collision on Carmen's Way Wednesday evening, Sault Police arrested Trevor Lyons and Christopher McKeachnie who both face assault charges.

A news release issued by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service states that a passerby who stopped to offer assistance was struck multiple times by the accused resulting in serious injuries. The pair then stole the victim's vehicle and fled the area.

Responding officers located the pair a short time later on Hearst Street. During his arrest, police say Mr. McKeachnie resisted arrest, assaulted one of the officers, and damaged a police cruiser.

On March 2, 2022, officers with Patrol Services charged 25-year-old Trevor Lyons and 30-year-old Christopher McKeachnie with aggravated assault and robbery.

Around 11:55 p.m. on March 1, 2022, the two accused were involved in a single vehicle collision on Carmen’s Way. The victim was driving by at the time and stopped to see if the accused needed assistance. At this time, [it is alleged that] the two accused struck the victim multiple times and stole their vehicle. The victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Officers located the two accused around 12:20 a.m. in the 0-100 block of Hearst Street. Mr. Lyons was arrested without incident, but while attempting to execute an arrest of Mr. McKeachnie, he resisted by pushing away officers. Officers were able to gain control of the accused and he was arrested. While in custody, [it is alleged that] Mr. McKeachnie caused damage to the rear of a police cruiser and kicked an officer multiple times.

Mr. Lyons is charged with:
    •    Aggravated assault
    •    Robbery

He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on May 2, 2022.

Mr. McKeachnie is charged with:
    •    Aggravated assault
    •    Robbery
    •    Obstructing a peace officer
    •    Assaulting a peace officer
    •    Mischief under $5,000
    •    Breach of recognizance – failing to remain in his residence

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
