A bail hearing for Steven Jones has been moved to Oct. 19 as his defence team awaits disclosure from the Crown.
Jones, 25, was seen briefly by video from the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre for the bail hearing appearance today, but did not speak.
He has been in custody since his Sept. 7 arrest near the scene of an attempted murder at the boardwalk. Police later linked Jones to the homicide of 22-year-old Taylor Marshall and charged him with first-degree murder.
The charges against Jones have not been proven in court. The Crown is not consenting to Jones’ release, pending trial, in relation to both the murder and attempted murder charges.
Appearing on behalf of Jones’ lawyer Bruce Willson, Leah Policicchio requested that the bail hearing be moved to Oct. 19 as defence is waiting for some disclosure from the Crown.
Wilson is a long-serving defence lawyer in Sault Ste. Marie who has represented numerous high-profile clients, including Dylan Jocko in the Wesley Hallam killing.
Marshall's mother was in attendance by video for the brief appearance, as well as members of the local media.
Earlier this week, the victim of the boardwalk attack, Liam Frenette, was released from hospital. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to assist with his recovery.
Details of evidence or testimony heard during the bail hearing are covered by a publication ban.
Jones is entitled to a bail hearing for the attempted murder charge in which the Crown will need to provide a justice with reasons he should be denied a release. In regards to the murder charge, the matter calls for automatic detention with a reverse onus on the defence to prove why he should not continue to be detained.
A few hours after Jones was arrested near the boardwalk attack, police were dispatched to an address on John Street where Marshall's body was discovered.
In a press conference held Sept. 14, Insp. Brent Duguay of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service told reporters that police linked Jones to the murder after discovering evidence that placed him "at or near" the John Street scene before his arrest at the boardwalk.
