Sault Ste. Marie firefighters were dispatched to a local intersection Saturday night to pry open a car door — because the person inside was slumped over the steering wheel, fast asleep.

Sault Police were the first to respond, arriving at Carmen’s Way and Second Line East at around 6:50 p.m. on March 9.

The vehicle was locked, running and in drive, police say.

After firefighters managed to open the door, officers developed grounds to believe the driver was impaired by drugs.

“The accused refused to comply with multiple demands for a blood screening,” says a press release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. “They were arrested.”

Brett Anderson, 28, is charged with refusing to comply with a blood demand.

He was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled back in court on May 6.

The allegation has not been tested in court and Anderson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
