A man faces robbery and theft charges after police received multiple complaints between 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. yesterday morning.
He's accused of fighting with people, stealing items from Bay Street businesses, attempting to steal purses and bags from passerby, and erratic behaviour.
Details can be read in the Sault Police release below. None of the allegations have been tested in court and the man is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
On Sept. 26, 2024, officers with Patrol Services charged 50-year-old Michael Lannigan with robbery and theft.
On the morning of Sept. 26, 911 Communicators received multiple unrelated calls for service regarding the accused in a short period of time.
Around 9 a.m., police received reports of a suspicious person – later identified as the accused – yelling and behaving erratically outside business in the 0-100 block of Foster Drive.
Around 10:15 a.m., it was reported the accused stole an item from a business in the 200 block of Bay Street. A short time later, it was reported the accused attempted to steal a victim’s purse on Elgin Street while riding by on a bicycle and yelling at them.
Around 10:45 a.m., it was reported the accused was fighting with another individual in the 700 block of Wellington Street East.
Around 11:05 a.m., it was reported the accused attempted to steal a duffle bag from a victim in the 100 block of East Street. Shortly thereafter, it was reported the accused attempted to steal another victim’s purse while riding by on a bicycle.
Around 11:15 a.m., it was reported the accused attempted to steal items from multiple businesses in the 200 block of Bay Street.
Officers located the accused on Hughes Street, and they were arrested.
The accused is charged with:
- Robbery
- Theft under $5,000 x2
The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
