Collision leads to impaired driving charges

Officers responded to the area of MacDonald Avenue and Lake Street to investigate a single vehicle crash

Police have charged Joseph Chartrand with impaired driving following a single vehicle collision that occurred near MacDonald Avenue and Lake Street on Friday evening.

A news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service states that the 63-year-old "provided two samples into an approved device, registering two fail results."

Full text of the release follows:

On Aug. 20, 2021 officers with Patrol Services charged 63-year-old Joseph Chartrand with impaired driving – alcohol and drugs.

Around 9:40 p.m., police were called about a single vehicle collision in the area of MacDonald Avenue and Lake Street. Upon arrival, Fire Services and EMS were on scene and officers observed some flames under the vehicle.

Upon speaking with the accused, officers determined he was the driver at the time of the collision. As a result of the investigation officers developed grounds to believe the accused’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol.

He was arrested and later provided two samples into an approved device, registering two fail results.

He is charged with impaired driving – alcohol and drugs, and impaired driving – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus). He was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 18, 2021.
