The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has deemed a local police officer not a fault in regards to an incident that took place this summer, a news release issued today states.

On the morning of July 13, 2020, a 54-year-old woman was detained under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital.

After being admitted into a secure room, a nurse tried to sedate the woman with an injection when she jumped up and advanced on the nurse.

A Sault Ste. Marie Police Service officer, who was standing outside the room, told the woman to step back into the room, and a struggle ensued until the woman was restrained and sedated with the help of hospital staff.

She ended up with a broken wrist as a result.

SIU Director Joseph Martino has determined there are no reasonable grounds to believe that the officer committed a criminal offence.

The full SIU report can be read here.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or an allegation of sexual assault.
