A crash on Black Road over the weekend has led to numerous charges for the driver of the vehicle.

Around 8 p.m. on June 9, a 911 call reported a vehicle crashing into a fence at a business in the 1000 block of Black Road.

Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service responded to the scene and found the vehicle with a person standing near it.

Police say the officers believed that the person's ability to drive was impaired, so he was placed in a cruiser under "investigative detention."

During that time, police say the man "kicked the door multiple times, causing it to break."

The individual was arrested, and further investigation showed he was prohibited from driving.

Police allege the individual also refused to provide a breath sample when officers read a demand for one.

Charles Syrette, 40, is charged with:

  • operation while impaired – alcohol and/or drugs
  • failure or refusal to comply with demand
  • operation while prohibited (x2)
  • mischief over $5,000
  • fail to comply with undertaking (x8)
  • driving while under suspension (under the Highway Traffic Act)

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Syrette is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
