A 23-year-old driver was arrested early yesterday morning for allegedly refusing to provide a breath sample.

Sault police say around 4 a.m. on July 12, officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Wilcox Avenue for a disturbance report.

“Upon arrival, officers conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle described by the caller and developed grounds to believe the driver’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol,” says a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

Police say they attempted to obtain a breath sample from the driver, but he allegedly refused.

Dean Hicks is charged with failure or refusal to comply with a breath demand. He was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled back in court on Sept. 11, 2023.

The allegation has not been tested in court and Hicks is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
