A 24-year-old driver has been charged with stunt driving after they were seen speeding in a 50km/h zone.

Around 12:30 p.m. on March 29, while conducting speed enforcement on Carmen's Way**, an officer observed a vehicle travelling 113 km/h in a 50km/h zone.

The officer conducted a traffic stop on Lyons Avenue, near Patrick Street.

The accused driver also faces a 30-day driver's licence suspension and vehicle impoundment for 14 days, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service said in a news release. The average fee for towing and impounding a vehicle for 14 days is approximately $1,400.

"Driving at dangerous speeds is proven to cause serious injuries and death of drivers and passengers of vehicles, and others using roadways," reads the news release. "As we continue to receive winter-type weather, road conditions can be slippery. It is crucial everyone in Sault Ste. Marie and Prince Township drive according to conditions and obey posted speed limits."

**Editor's note: An earlier news release from the Sault Ste. Marie police indicated speed enforcement was taking place on Lyons Avenue, rather than Carmen's Way. The police have since issued a correction.
