Driver facing multiple charges after person struck in parking lot

Witnesses told police the driver had pushed another person out of their vehicle

An 18-year-old is facing multiple charges after Sault Ste. Marie Police say a person was struck trying to help someone who had been pushed out of a vehicle.

Police were called to a Pine Street parking lot at around 3 a.m. Monday. 

“Upon arrival, officers learned the driver, who witnesses identified as the accused, had pushed another person out of their vehicle,” police alleged in a news release.

“When friends of the person who was pushed from the vehicle attempted to come to their aid, the driver turned around and sped away, striking a victim with the vehicle while exiting the parking lot.”

The victim was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Officers were able to track down the vehicle they believed was involved and arrest a suspect.

Police say multiple breath samples registered a blood alcohol concentration above zero.

Gage Lothrop has been charged with:

  • Dangerous pperation causing bodily harm
  • Failure to stop at an accident resulting in bodily harm
  • Novice driver – blood alcohol concentration above zero (under the Highway Traffic Act)
  • Class G1 licence holder – unaccompanied by a qualified driver (under the Highway Traffic Act)

The accused is scheduled to appear in court on November 20.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Lothrop is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
