Reporting Scams

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would again like to remind everyone of possible scams occurring in our area, and would like the publics’ assistance in reporting these incidents.

Recently City Police have received complaints from senior citizens complaining that an individual has come to their doorway seeking assistance. The individual is using different ploys to gain access to the inside of their homes. Once inside the culprit attempts to steal wallets, purses or other easy to grab, valuable items. The culprit then leaves the residence.

City Police would like the community to be aware of possible persons attempting to gain access to their home. If someone does come to the door seeking assistance claiming to need the phone or other possible plots, please contact the police and do not let any person unknown to you have access to your residence. If you are aware of senior citizens who may live on their own please inform them of this information, to be sure they won’t be the next possible victims.

The suspect in the reported incidents is described as a white male, early 20’s, thin build, short dark hair, thick eyebrows and blue eyes.

If you or someone you know is the victim of a similar scam, please report the matter to the City Police at 949-6300.

Vandalism

Be aware that causing damage to property by either breaking it or defacing it is a crime. Vandalism has been done to many of the elections signs, which are posted throughout the city. Vandals should be reminded that if caught they could face criminal charges of mischief. If you observe someone destroying the election signs or any other property you may report that crime to the City Police at 949-6300 or Crime Stoppers at 942-7867.

Ride Program

Yesterdays R.I.D.E program proved to be eventful.
- 298 vehicles were checked
- 2- provincial offence notices issued
- 2- 12 hour suspensions were issued

During the R.I.D.E program 2 arrests were also made. 30-year-old Ryan Pears of 250 Albert Street East Apt. #608 and 23-year-old Dennis Cory Guzzo of 28 Hughes Street were stopped and found to be in possession of 5 tablets of ecstasy and cannabis resin. Both were charged with 2 counts of Possession of a Controlled Drug and are scheduled to appear in court on February 6th.

Altercation Downtown

Yesterday afternoon at approximately 4:30 City Police responded to an altercation at Queen Street and Spring Street. It is believed that 46-year-old Ronald Williams of 864 Queen Street East assaulted a male known to him by punching him in the face and throwing him to the ground. Mr. Williams then broke the victims glasses by stepping on them. The accused resisted being arrested by Police but was eventually controlled and taken in to custody. Ronald Williams has been charged with 1 count of Assault, 1 count of Resist Arrest and 1 count of Mischief Under $5000.00. He will be appearing in court today. It is unknown what provoked the assault.

Theft From Local Multiple Sclerosis Society

City Police received a complaint of theft from the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Sometime between 6:30 and 8:30 last evening unknown thieves stole 1000 envelopes and letterheads from the front steps of the agency. Police would like to make it known to the public that if they do receive mail from the Multiple Sclerosis Society to contact their office at 759-0500 and verify whether or not the letter is legitimate.
