Male Arrested for Drug Possession: On the 1 st of March at 6:01 pm, members of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Street Team and Patrol Services conducted a vehicle stop on Wellington Street West in relation to a drug investigation.

Male Arrested for Drug Possession:

On the 1st of March at 6:01 pm, members of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Street Team and Patrol Services conducted a vehicle stop on Wellington Street West in relation to a drug investigation. Officers located approximately 4 grams of cocaine inside the vehicle and arrested the driver, 57 year-old Robert MacDonald of 584 Sherbourne Street and charged him with one count of possession of a controlled drug or substance and He is to appear in court on the 16th of April.  The estimated street value of the drugs seized is $400.00.

Shoplifting Related Charges:

Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested 25 year-old Jonathan Penrice of 251 Poplar Street yesterday morning and charged him with one count of theft under $5,000.00 and one count of possession of property obtained by crime.  It is alleged that on the 1st of March just after 9 am, the accused attended at the Market Mall Pharmacy and Metro store stole a number of items. The accused is to appear in court on the 16th of April.

Requesting the Public’s Assistance with Two Investigations: 

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance with a robbery investigation.  At approximately 12:11 am last night, a 51 year-old female that was walking in the area of Wellington Street West, near Wardlaw Fuels, was robbed by an unknown male.  The suspect approached her and asked her for a cigarette.  The victim advised that she was going to buy some, when the male pushed her and stole her wallet.  The suspect took the cash out, threw her wallet to the ground and fled on foot in a westbound direction.  The victim was not injured.  Police checked the area with negative results.  The male was described as approximately 25 years of age, around 5’9, average build, clean shaven, wearing a red jacket with a hood and white stripes down the arms, dark pants and white runners.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance with a complaint they received regarding a male accosting a female on Northland Road yesterday morning.  At approximately 10 am, a 17 year-old female was walking on Northland Road when she was approached by a male in a vehicle who stopped and asked if she needed a ride.  The victim advised she did not and the male got out of the vehicle and grabbed her jacket.  The victim struck the male and ran to a home of a person known to her.  The vehicle sped off in a northbound direction towards Conmee Avenue.  The male was described as being approximately 50 – 60 years of age between 5’8 -5’10”, stocky, heavier set build, black and graying hair with some balding on the top.  The vehicle was described as a newer style mini-type SUV, silver in colour.  Officers checked the area with negative results.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is committed to proactively teaching residents how to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime though education and awareness Personal Security involves taking steps to keep yourself safe, and protecting yourself from situations that are potentially violent or criminal. Personal Security is important because property can be replaced, but you are irreplaceable. Like other methods of crime prevention, personal security involves recognizing, anticipating, and assessing the risk of a crime occurring. In other words, what situations are potentially threatening to you and likely to put you in peril? Once you have identified a risk, you can take steps to remove or reduce it. Being aware and informed is important to preventing crimes from occurring, which is why the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service offers and reminds the public the of the following safety tips.

  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times, and do not place yourself in situations which might jeopardize your safety.
  • Travel in well-lit and populated areas.   
  • Plan your route and avoid short cuts through parks, alley ways, vacant lots or unlit areas, especially at night.
  • Avoid walking alone if you can. Especially at night. Get a friend to accompany you. If they can’t, let them know the route you’re taking, when you’re leaving and call when you arrive.
  • Don’t carry large sums of money or unnecessary valuables. Use cash alternatives such as debit cards.
  • Don’t wear headsets or any device that could compromise your hearing.
  • Trust your intuition – if something doesn’t feel right, it likely isn’t.
  • Call police immediately if you see anyone or anything suspicious.
  • If you feel you are being followed, or may be accosted, run to a safe place, such as a store, coffee shop or gas station and report it to police.    
  • If someone grabs your purse, do not resist

Property Crimes:

  • A Handicap scooter was reported stolen from a residence property on Laura Street.  Described as a 4 wheeler, navy blue, with a light on the front and rear.
  • An 18 foot float trailer was stolen from McNabb Street.
  • Gas was stolen from a U-Haul on Turk Road and business vehicles on Industrial Court. 
  • A vehicle on Connaught Avenue had a window smashed and the tires slashed.
