On 10 May 2013 a break and enter was reported to a residence on Douglas St. The resident was woken to find a male crawling through her window.  The suspect is describes as Caucasian with spiked blonde hair, unshaven facial hair, wearing a grey t-shirt with blue or grey writing on it. The male fled on foot in an unknown direction.  Officers contained the area and K-9 was able to track the suspect’s movement pattern to the Connaught / Carufel Avenue areas.  The track was unsuccessful.

A break and enter was also reported today at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church on Cathcart Street.  A downstairs storage area was broken into sometime overnight and a quantity of meat was stolen.

On 10 May 2013, officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Street Team executed a search warrant at a residence located at 566 Northland Road.  A resident, Brian KEILLOR age 29 of 566 Northland Road was arrested for cultivation of marihuana over 3 kg and trafficking marihuana.  Found within the residence was an elaborate three-stage cultivation operation.  The search of the residence and dismantling of the operation is ongoing.  At this time it is estimated that over 100 marihuana plants have been located in stages of growth from seedling to mature. It is estimated at this time that the seized amount of drugs will be substantial.  The investigation is continuing and additional charges may be pending once complete.  The accused has been remanded into custody for bail court on Monday, 13 May 2013.

Editor's note: initially two people were charged in this incident. All charges against the second person were withdrawn.

Earlier release:

22 year old Derek Derasp was arrested by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Street Team after they received information that he was in possession of drugs and a knife.  Upon his arrest it is alleged that Mr. Derasp was in possession of 14 baggies containing approximately 4 grams of cocaine each, a gram of marijuana, brass knuckles and had a knife hidden inside his pants.  He was charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of marijuana, possession of a prohibited weapon (the brass knuckles), and possession of a concealed weapon.  At the time he was on a court order prohibiting him from possessing weapons and probation with a condition to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.  He was also charged with breaching both of those orders.  He will be appearing in bail court this morning.

At approximately 7:45 p.m., police responded to a report of a domestic dispute in the 200 block of Wallace Terrace.  Upon arrival officers could hear yelling and screaming from inside the residence.  Upon entering they observed a male over top of a female choking her.  The male person was arrested and charged with choking to overcome resistance and assault.  He will be appearing in bail court today.

On May 10 at approximately 2:35 am, police responded to an alarm call at the West End Community Center on Goulais Avenue.  Upon arrival they found a door to be open.  When they entered the building they found a male inside.  He was arrested and searched and it is alleged that he was found to be in possession of instruments used for breaking in (a screwdriver and pliers) and a knife that opened by centrifugal force making it a prohibited weapon.  Michael Ryan of Second Line West will be appearing in bail court charged with Break and Enter with Intent, possession of break in instruments and possession of a prohibited weapon.
