4 Counts of Assault

A 41-year old male will appear in bail court this morning after City Police received a complaint from the wife of the accused. It is alleged that the accused assaulted his wife on a number of occasions between January 1st and March 12th of this year. The assaults included grabbing and pushing the victim to the floor, hitting the victim in the mouth, squeezing the victim’s head and slapping and pulling the victim’s hair. On one occasion the accused threatened to kill the victim. The incidents took place in a downtown residence. The accused has been charged with 4 counts of assault and one count of threatening to cause death or bodily harm.

News release on May 11th

A 15-year old youth was arrested yesterday in relation to an incident at a centrally located high school that occurred on May 9th. It is alleged that on that date the accused slapped another youth in the face and threatened to harm the victim if they told on the accused. Another student who witnessed the assault was also threatened. The accused has been charged with one count of assault, one count of threatening and one count of intimidation. The accused will appear in court on June 14th.

Update: Yesterday morning the accused from the above incident was arrested and will appear in bail court this morning. It is alleged that the accused told other persons that he/she would harm the victim of the assault for telling about the incident. The accused was on a release document with a number of conditions when released on the 11th. The accused has been charged with one count of threatening and one count of breach of a release document.

Breach of Probation

A 16-year old youth was arrested yesterday morning and charged with one count of assault with a weapon and one count of breach of probation. It is alleged that on the May 10th the accused assaulted another youth by striking the male victim in the head and face area a number of times. The accused allegedly was holding a lighter in their fist while punching the victim. The victim received minor injuries and did not require medical treatment. The incident occurred in the downtown area. The accused was on probation at the time of the incident. The accused will appear in court on June 28th.

Motor Collision

Yesterday morning City Police attended for a motor vehicle collision with injuries in the 1500 block of Queen Street East. A car driven by 79-year old Ruth Therien of 59 Thornloe Crescent was traveling westbound on Queen Street East. A car driven by 18-year old Patrick Fluke of 118 Dell Avenue was exiting from a civic address and allegedly pulled out of the driveway and was struck by the Therien vehicle. Mrs. Therien was taken by ambulance to the Sault Area Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Both vehicles sustained moderate damage. Mr. Fluke has been charged under the Highway Traffic of Ontario with one count of fail to yield from driveway.

Break and Enter

City Police received 2 break and enter reports yesterday. Sometime overnight on the 11th and 12th of May thieves broke into the Subway Store at the Cambrian Mall and made off with a very minimal amount of gift certificates. A trailer was broken into sometime in the last week at a residence in the 100 block of Roosevelt Avenue but nothing appears taken.

Theft of Purse in Parking Lot

Yesterday City Police received a report of a purse being taken from a shopping cart. The victim was outside and turned their back to the cart while placing a child in a car when unknown person or persons took her purse. The incident occurred in the Zellers Plaza at Great Northern Road and Northern Avenue. If you saw this crime take place or know who is responsible, call City Police at 949-6300. The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like to remind the public to pay attention to your purse and wallet when out shopping. While in a store do not leave your purse in your cart while you look at items. People commonly leave their purse in their cart, stand beside the cart but turn their back to their purse while shopping. While unloading your parcels, keep your purse on you or put it in your vehicle first. All it takes is a spilt second for thief to steal your purse. Once it is stolen, the thief has access to your cash, credit cards and may also have your house keys.
