Morning news:

Graffiti reports received and crime prevention tips.

Since the beginning of September the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service has received numerous mischief related calls.

Twelve calls are specifically graffiti related.

Graffiti is the illegal defacing of property by painting or otherwise marking it with words, pictures or symbols.

The majority of graffiti involves “tags”, which are personalized signatures or “throw ups”, which are multi-coloured, bubble lettering painted on mailboxes, hydro poles, bridges or walls.

Graffiti has a negative effect on our communities in many ways.

It contributes to reduced property value, a decline in commercial sales, increased crime rates in affected areas and wasted tax dollars for clean-up.

For a business owner or a home owner it can be very costly to repair the damage.

Graffiti diminishes a citizen’s feelings of safety and security.

The following tips may reduce the chances that your business or property will become the target for graffiti.

-keep the exterior of your business clean and neat

-install exterior lighting on motion sensors

-install surveillance cameras

-remove graffiti immediately

-fences, shrubs and thorny bushes can deter vandals

-move dumpsters away from walls

If you see suspicious persons or vehicles around a business or home call the police.

While many may think spray painting buildings or cars is fun or art, it is a criminal act known as mischief.

Persons can be charged with mischief under $5,000 or mischief over $5,000.

If you are convicted in court, your criminal record could hamper you from going across the border or could prevent you from being employed at your dream job due to a criminal record.
