Local police who specialize in explosives have finished disposing of unspecified hazardous materials at the Pine Street Marina.

Sault Police issued a news release late Wednesday night, announcing the end of the operation.

"No physical injuries were sustained in the process," the release said. "Sault Police thank our partners with the OPP for their assistance to ensure the safe disposal of the material. Thank you to community members for avoiding the area to allow officers to safely complete the process."

It is not known what materials required disposal or how that material was disposed. SooToday is seeking further information and will provide more details as they become available.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Don’t be alarmed if you hear some loud noises at the Pine Street Marina today. It’s just the police disposing of hazardous materials.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service issued a news release this afternoon, alerting the public to the heavy police presence expected at the marina for the next several hours.

“The plan is to safely dispose of the material,” the release says. “During this process, members of the public will hear several loud noises. The noises will come as a result of safely disposing of the material. Members of the public are urged to avoid the area to allow officers to conduct this initiative safely.”

Please don’t call 911, police say.

“When the process is complete, further information will be released.”

The disposal is being led by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service (SSMPS) Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Urban Search and Rescue/Chemical, Biological, Nuclear and Explosives Team (UCERT).
