Sault Ste. Marie Police have charged a 58-year-old man with multiple offences after he allegedly threatened staff at a local business with what appeared to be a gun.

Police say on Oct. 18 at around 1:20 p.m., a man entered a business in the 600 block of Second Line West and threatened employees with what the victims described as a gun. The suspect fled the area to a residence in the 800 block of Cooper Street.

When officers ultimately located the accused, they say he did not follow the officer's demand to leave the residence.

The Emergency Services Unit (ESU) arrived at the scene and contained the area.

After long negotiations, police say the accused remained in the residence and refused to leave.

ESU members later entered the residence and arrested the suspect.

Upon searching the residence, officers did not find a gun.

Paul Ingram, 58, is charged with the following:

  • Use firearm in commission of an indictable offence
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Uttering threats
  • Possession of a firearm, contrary to Prohibition Order
  • Breach of probation – failing to keep the peace and be of good behaviour

Ingram was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
