Man accused of brandishing knife during theft

Police have arrested Joshua Sleeman after it is alleged that he brandished a knife during a theft that occurred at the Station Mall Tuesday evening.

A news release issued by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service states that the 36-year-old accused also resisted arrest after responding officers located him on Dennis Street.

Full text of the news release follows:

On March 1, 2022, officers with Patrol Services charged 36-year-old Joshua Sleeman with robbery.

Around 5:30 p.m., [it is alleged that] the accused attended a business at the Station Mall, concealed an item on his person and attempted to leave without paying for the item. Staff attempted to stop the accused and at this time he pulled a knife on the victim, then fled the area.

Officers responded around 5:40 p.m. and located the accused in the 100 block of Dennis Street. While executing an arrest, [it is alleged that] the accused resisted. Officers were able to gain control of the accused and he was arrested. A subsequent search found the accused to be in possession of a knife, as well as the item reported stolen from the business.

He is charged with:
    •    Robbery
    •    Resisting a peace officer

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
