Dustin Sayers struck a man with a tire iron during an altercation that occurred four years ago.

Last Friday, he was in a Sault Ste. Marie courtroom where he pleaded guilty to assault with a weapon and two counts of failing to attend court.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Aug. 11, 2020 in a Northern Avenue shopping plaza parking lot.

Ontario Court Justice Melanie Dunn heard two people called police to report an assault that occurred in front of the former Lowe's location.

They had been involved in an altercation with people who had left in a grey Ford Escape SUV, and then returned with a tire iron, assistant Crown attorney Chris Thompson said.

Officers were in the area and spotted the vehicle as it headed north on Great Northern Road.

A woman was behind the wheel and Sayers was a passenger.

Sayers, 49, didn't show up for court on two occasions: Oct. 4, 2021 and again on Nov. 20, 2023.

The court ordered a pre-sentence report with a Gladue component.

Sentencing will take place on Aug. 14.
