A 31-year-old man is accused of depositing a stolen cheque in his bank account.

Sault Police say the cheque, worth $5,000, was deposited in the suspect’s account on March 23, 2024.

The person whose cheque was stolen does not know the suspect, police say.

The accused was already in custody on an unrelated charge when detectives with the Fraud Unit attended the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre on July 24 to arrest him.

Dustin Elie, 31, is charged with one count of fraud over $5,000.

He remains in custody.

The allegation has not been tested in court and Elie is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
