Man charged with possessing a catalytic converter obtained by crime

Shane Williams was charged with possession of property obtained by crime after police responded to a call this weekend of a suspicious person under a vehicle. Officers discovered he had stolen a catalytic converter from the vehicle, a news release issued by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service stated.

Full text of the release follows:

On February 27, 2022, officers with Patrol Services charged 38-year-old Shane Williams with possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

Around 10:00 p.m. officers responded to a call of a suspicious person under a vehicle in the 100 block of James Street. While responding, officers received information the person had left the area in a vehicle. Officers located the vehicle matching the description and executed a traffic stop.

A man matching the description of the complaint was a passenger in the vehicle. Officers identified him as the accused and developed grounds to believe he had stolen a catalytic converter from a vehicle in the 100 block of James Street.

He was arrested. A subsequent search found the accused to be in possession of a catalytic converter and tools used to remove it from a vehicle. He is charged with,

  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime under $5,000
  • Mischief Under $5,000
  • Theft Under $5,000
  • Possession of Break in Instruments

He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on May 2, 2022.
