Man stole firearm from vehicle, ran from cops when confronted: Sault Police

27-year-old faces 22 criminal charges in connection with Bay Street theft

One person is facing 22 charges after a firearm and ammunition were stolen from a vehicle earlier this week.

Sault Ste. Marie Police began investigating the theft in the 300 block of Bay Street on Wednesday.

On Thursday, police searched a residence in the 0-100 block of Cathcart Street, where they say they found ammunition and other items that had been stolen from the vehicle.

“The accused was located inside the residence and attempted to run from police,” says a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. “They were arrested a short distance from the residence.”

“The stolen firearm was located outside as the accused had dropped it while they were attempting to run away.”

Waasmo Bradford, 27, is charged with:  

  • Careless Storage of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device, or Ammunition x3
  • Careless Use of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device, or Ammunition x2
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order x4
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of Firearm
  • Possession of Firearm or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order x8
  • Possession of Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000
  • Unauthorized Possession of Prohibited or Restricted Firearm

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Bradford is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
