A Michigan resident was arrested at the Canadian border early yesterday morning and charged with impaired driving.

Sault Ste. Marie police say they were tipped off on May 9 by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), who suspected a driver trying to cross into Canada was impaired.

“Officers were dispatched to the area as CBSA had a driver in custody for impaired driving,” says a news release from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. “Officers took over the investigation and the accused was arrested. The accused provided two breath samples into an approved device, registering two results above the legal limit.”

Aarik Bennet of Beaverton, Michigan is charged with:

• Operation while Impaired – Alcohol and/or Drug
• Operation while Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80+)

Bennet was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court again on June 12, 2023. None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
