Crime Stoppers of Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District has announced a special incentive in honour of its "anniversary month."

Throughout June, tips submitted through its Wanted Wednesday initiative that lead to the arrest of a suspect will be eligible for a minimum reward of $500, the organization says.

This coming June 20 marks the 39th anniversary of Crime Stoppers of Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District Inc., Crime Stoppers said in a release.

Since its founding on June 20, 1985, the organization says it has been "committed to promoting community safety by encouraging public participation in crime-solving efforts".

Over the years, the local Crime Stoppers says it has removed more than $7.7 million worth of illegal drugs from our streets, recovered more than $3.9 million in stolen property, and seized numerous illegal weapons.

"We have received over 30,000 tips from the public, leading to 4,486 arrests and the approval of over $500,000 in rewards for tipsters," Crime Stoppers added.

Crime Stoppers notes it is not a law enforcement agency and does not conduct investigations.

"Instead, it serves as a conduit for the public to provide information to help solve past, present, and future crimes, including locating wanted persons, missing persons, narcotics, stolen property, and other criminal activities."
