The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like to remind motorists to take time to clean the snow off of their vehicles before heading out on the road this morning. Also remember to adjust your driving to the road conditions today. Allow yourself extra stopping distance and do not follow to close.
Two Youth Charged for Dumpster Fire
On the 7th of January around 7 pm a 16-year old male youth and a 14-year old male youth lit a dumpster on fire with gasoline at the Market Mall on Second Line West. The youths then fled the area. Fire Services and officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service attended at the fire. Shortly after 7 pm both youths were taken into custody. Both youths have been charged with one count each of arson-damage to property of others and one count each of possession of incendiary material. The 16-year old youth will appear in bail court this morning. The 14-year old youth will appear in court on February 13th. The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is asking anyone who witnessed this arson to contact them at 949-6300.
The following persons will also appear in bail court this morning:
1) A 15-year old youth turned himself in on outstanding warrants on the 8th of January. The youth has been charged with one count of break and enter, two counts of theft under $5,000, one count of possession of property obtained by crime, five counts of breach of release order, one count of fail to appear for court or prints and two counts of breach of probation under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA). The incidents stem from August of 2006 to December of 2006.
2) A 21-year old male was arrested on the 6th of January and charged with one count of assault and one count of mischief under $5,000.It is alleged that the accused assaulted his girlfriend and also damaged the door to her residence by kicking it.
3) 30-year old Daniel Miller of 323-138 East Street was arrested on the 6th of January and charged with one count of resist arrest, one count of disarming a police officer and one count of breach of probation. Just after 6 pm on the 6th of January officers were dealing with the accused who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol while on probation not to consume alcohol. When officers went to arrest the accused it is alleged that the accused attempted to take the officers firearm. The accused continued to resist arrest.
4) A 25-year old male was arrested on the 7th of January and charged with one count of robbery and three counts of breach of probation. It is alleged that on December 10th the accused attended at his ex-girlfriend’s address and stole her bank card after assaulting her.
5) 39-year old Timothy Scholtyssek of 1525 Peoples Road was arrested on the 6th of January and charged with one count of mischief, one count of resist arrest and one count of fail to appear for fingerprints. It is alleged that just after 2:30 am on the 6th the accused was disturbing his neighbours with his loud stereo. When officers went to speak to the accused they learned he was wanted on an outstanding warrant for one count of fail to appear for fingerprints. When officers went to arrest the accused he resisted and was subsequently taken into custody.
Stolen B.C. Truck Recovered
41-year old Arthur Ranger of 680 Portage Lane was arrested on the 5th of January and charged with one count of possession of property obtained by crime. It is alleged that the accused was in possession of a pickup truck that had reported stolen in British Columbia. He will appear in court on February 12th.
Youth Charged with Break & Enter
News release from January 2nd
A residence on Sheppard Street was entered between 7 pm on the 30th of December and 7 am on the 31st of December. Items taken include two bottles of wine, a cell phone, an MP3 player and a laptop computer.
Update: A 16-year old male has been charged with one count of break and enter and commit an offence and one count of breach of probation YCJA. He will appear in court on February 6th.
Women Charged after Assaulting Boyfriend
On the 6th of January a 23-year old female was charged with one count of assault and one count of assault with a weapon. It is alleged that the accused assaulted her boyfriend by punching him and by throwing a knife at the victim. The accused will appear in court on February 12th.
The following break and enters were reported over the weekend:
1) A residence on Wemyss Street was broken into between the 2nd of January and the 7th of January. Items taken include jewellery and power tools.
2) On the 8th of January just after 4 am a residence in the 700 block of Pine Street was awaken by a window being broken. He then observed two males leaving his residence with an X-box 360. Officers were unable to locate anyone.

Motor Vehicle Collision at Great Northern & Northern Ave.
On Friday January 5th officers from Traffic Services attended at the intersection of Great Northern Road and Northern Avenue for a motor vehicle collision that sent two persons to the Sault Area Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A maroon vehicle operated by a 42-year old female was traveling southbound on Great Northern Road. A blue vehicle operated by a 51-year old male was traveling westbound on Northern Avenue. It is alleged that the maroon vehicle stopped at the light and then proceeded into the intersection colliding with the blue car. The 42-year old female has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario with one count of red light-fail to stop. Both vehicles received moderate damage. Both drivers were taken to the Sault Area Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Man Arrested for Possession of Child Porn
On January 4th just after 12 noon officers from Canada Border Services Agency conducted a routine search of a vehicle at the Sault Ste. Marie port. The search of the vehicle lead to the discovery of a laptop computer in which images of child pornography were found.
As a result of the search officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service were notified and attended at the Canada Border Services Office located on Huron Street.
The laptop has been seized as part of the investigation and has been turned over to the Technological Crime Unit of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. The investigation into this matter is continuing.
48-year old John Boyd Anderson of Owen Sound has been charged under the Criminal Code of Canada by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service with one count of possession of child pornography and one count of importing/distributing child pornography.
In addition Mr. Anderson faces charges of possession of illegally imported goods, smuggling, and evading compliance under the Customs Act.
Mr. Anderson will appear in bail court on Monday January 8th at 10 am
