Canada Road Safety Week

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service will be participating in Canada Road Safety Week, which runs from May 17th to May 23rd. During this safety campaign the City Police will team up with the R.I.D.E. unit, and other law enforcement agencies in the area, such as the O.P.P. and the Anishinabek Police. Officers will be checking to ensure the drivers are sober and alert, that occupants of vehicles are buckled up and the children are properly secured in seat belts. In addition to motor vehicles this campaign will also ensure that pedestrians and cyclists alike are obeying road safety laws.

Domestic Disputes

3 males will be appearing in bail court in relation to 3 separate domestic dispute calls from the weekend:

1) A 36-year old male was arrested on May 15th in the evening hours. It is alleged that on April 29th the accused forced food into the mouth of his wife causing her to choke. The couple had been arguing prior to the assault. The male was on probation at the time with terms to keep the peace and be good. The accused has been charged with one count of assault and one count of breach of probation.

2) A 36-year old male got into an argument with his wife just after midnight on the 14th in their east end residence. It is alleged that the male grabbed the victim by the front of her shirt and held her up against the kitchen counter. The accused has been charged with one count of assault.

3) On the 14th of May just before midnight a 21-year old male attended at his ex-girlfriends residence and pushed his way in. He eventually left after being repeatedly asked to do so. Shortly after, the victim’s new boyfriend arrived at her apartment and when she opened to door allowing the male in the accused came running towards the new boyfriend, grabbing a knife on his way. The 2 males fought and the male victim was able to get the knife away from the accused. The female victim was threatened when she tried to intervene and was also cut in the hand. She required medical treatment for the non-life threatening injury. The accused has been charged with 2 counts of assault with a weapon, two counts of threatening and one count of forcible entry.

Possession Charges Laid

On May 15th just after 2 pm City Police arrested 30-year old Jamie Bailey of main floor 218 Gloucester Street for a non-criminal driving offence. When the accused was searched officers located 3 baggies containing cocaine. Officers seized 3 grams, which has a street value of approximately $300. The accused has been charged with one count of possession of a controlled drug or substance and will appear in bail court this morning.

Controlled Drug Charge

On May 13th officers arrested 43-year old Sharon Miskimins of 3-603 Queen Street West after officers located 20 grams of marijuana in her residence. The narcotics have a street value of approximately $300. The accused will appear in court on June 20th after being charged with one count of a controlled drug or substance.

Motor Vehicle Collision

On May 14th just before 9 pm a motor vehicle collision sent 2 people to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. A pickup truck operated by Gregory Sandvik of 190 McMeeken Street was southbound on Queen Street East and was turning left from Queen Street East onto Lake Street. A car operated by James Robert, age 20, of 8B Spruce Street of Wawa, Ontario was allegedly traveling at an excessive amount of speed swiped the Sandvik vehicle. The Robert vehicle lost control and struck a utility pole on the south side of Queen Street. The Sandvik vehicle received light damage and the Robert vehicle was demolished. Mr. Robert and a 17-year old passenger of his were taken to the Sault Area Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. James Robert has been charged under the Criminal Code of Canada with one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and will appear in court on June 20th.

Break and Enters

Over the weekend City Police received a number of reports of break and enters:

1) On the 14th of May of a shed in the 200 block of Cathcart Street was entered and 2 bicycles were taken.

2) On the 15th of May just after 4 am City Police attended at H. M. Robbins School on East Balfour Street. Thieves gained entry and made off with a cash box containing a small-undisclosed amount of money.

3) Just before 8:30 am on May 15th thieves attempted to break into the Indian Friendship Centre located at 122 East Street but did not gain entry.

4) A garage in the 100 block of Princeton Drive was entered overnight on the 14th and 15th. Thieves made off with a silver mongoose bike.

5) On May 15th Water Pro located at 196 Wellington Street East reported someone entered their business and took 55 empty water jugs, which are refundable.

6) Overnight between the 14th and 15th thieves broke into a garage and stole a 15 speed navy and orange bike and possibly other items. The homeowner is still determining if anything else was taken.
