Fraud Investigation Completed, One Arrest In June 2013, the Corporation of the City of Sault Ste. Marie requested the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service’s assistance regarding financial concerns related to the Essar Centre.

Fraud Investigation Completed, One Arrest

In June 2013, the Corporation of the City of Sault Ste. Marie requested the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service’s assistance regarding financial concerns related to the Essar Centre.  As a result of this request the Fraud Unit of the Investigation Services Division of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service commenced an investigation. 

The Fraud Unit has now completed the criminal investigation. 

Earlier today 39-year old Trevor Zachary of 20 Ohio Drive of Sault Ste. Marie was charged with several fraud related offences.

The alleged offences occurred between 2008 and 2013 while Mr. Zachary was employed by the City of Sault Ste. Marie as the Marketing and Events Manager for the Essar Centre.  

The accused has been charged with:

*Four counts of Fraud Over $5,000 related to the misappropriation of funds for personal gain and preventing revenues for the Corporation of the City of Sault Ste. Marie;

*Eight counts of Forgery for creating false record which were acted on as being genuine;

*Eight counts of Uttering a Forged Document which caused the Corporation of the City of Sault Ste. Marie to act upon the documents as if they were genuine;

*One count of Breach of Trust by a Public Officer for deceitfully or fraudulently using public funds and municipal recreational facilities.

The accused will appear in court on October 28, 2013.

At this time no further details are being released as the matter is now before the courts.

Morning news:

A break and enter was reported to a residence in the 100 block of Willow Avenue. The break in happened between September 7th and September 15th. An Acer computer and two rifles were reported stolen.

A 38 year old male was arrested as a result of a domestic violence incident. It is alleged that on the 14th of September the male assaulted his girlfriend by grabbing her by the throat and choking her. In addition on the 15ht of September he became involved in an argument with his girlfriend’s son and during the course of the argument threatened to kill him. He is charged with assault and threatening and will be appearing in bail court this morning.

An individual in the 100 block of Allard Street reported that unknown persons damaged his vehicle by bending the license plate and stealing the antenna.
