Sault Police say they arrested a person over the weekend who tried to bury a shotgun in a snowbank.

The scene unfolded Sunday afternoon, when officers were called to the 0-100 block of Great Northern Road at around 3 p.m. for a report of someone possibly carrying a gun wrapped in a blanket.

Police say when they spotted the suspect near Wawanosh and Blake avenues, the person ran away.

“Officers located the accused again nearby, where they were trying to bury something in a snowbank,” says a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. “Officers checked what they had buried and found a shotgun wrapped in a sleeping bag.”

The suspect was arrested.

Jolene Hammel, 32, is charged with carrying a concealed weapon and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

Hammel is being held in custody pending a bail hearing.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Hammel is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
