Officers of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service (SSMPS) will start patrolling the downtown core on bicycles on a regular basis, a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service states.

This is part of the SSMPS downtown enforcement strategy. High visibility clothing will make these officers easy to spot.

The Station Mall office will be used as the home base for the Bicycle Unit, which will allow officers direct access to the downtown core.

Bicycles are effective in an urban setting like our downtown, as officers can access various areas and manoeuvre more efficiently than a police cruiser, the release states.

Cycling the downtown core will also allow officers a greater opportunity to meet and talk with many of the people in the community.
