UPDATE: Police charge man with stomping on person’s head outside Station Mall

32-year-old charged with aggravated assault after violent incident on the boardwalk Thursday night that sent a victim to hospital with serious injuries

A person was rushed to hospital last night with serious injuries after a violent incident on the boardwalk outside Station Mall.

Sault Police were dispatched to the scene at approximately 7:20 p.m. Thursday to assist paramedics with an “unresponsive victim” — who’d been kicked to the ground and had their head stomped on.

A suspect was arrested a short time later near St. Mary’s River Drive and Bay Street.

“An investigation revealed the accused and the victim, who had met for the first time that evening on the boardwalk, got into a verbal argument which turned physical,” says a news release issued this morning by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. “The accused had kicked the victim, causing them to fall on the street, and then stomped on their head.”

Eric Day, 32, is charged with aggravated assault and was held in custody pending a bail hearing. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is urged to contact Detective Constable Corey Brown at (705) 949-6300, ext. 359.

Members of the public can also provide information anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 705-942-7867 or 1-800-222-8477. People can also submit a web-tip or download the P3 app.

As SooToday reported last night, there was a heavy police presence outside the mall last night, including a forensics van.
