NEWS RELEASE

*************************
Members of our Traffic Services Unit and Collision Reporting Centre have noticed an increase in the number of hit and run motor vehicle collisions being reported. The majority of these calls are being reported to have happened in area parking lots.

From Jan. 1, 2020 until March 30, 2020 98 hit and run collisions were reported, 67 in parking lots. From April 1, 2020 until May 2, 2020 an additional 21 hit and runs have been reported.

We wish to remind the public that all motor vehicle collisions should be reported. The majority of collisions are handled by the Collision Reporting Centre. While the office is not open to the public at this time, employees are still available to assist you via phone, 705-253-1600 or email, sault@accsupport.com.

Motor Vehicle Collisions occurring in parking lots may seem minor but if the combined damage to vehicles is in excess of $2,000, it must be reported to police or you could face a minimum penalty of a $110 fine and three demerit points.

While your insurance provider may not be available to assist you in person; you should notify them over the phone, via email or using other means of communication like their website or business app.

With many of these hit and run collisions being reported as happening in parking lots, everyone should pay extra attention to their surroundings. If you’re able to, park further away from store entrances and vehicles. Avoid parking next to shopping cart corrals and other areas where people may come in close contact with your vehicle.
