Police responded to a report of someone in the area of Chapple Avenue and Albion Street with a firearm and are currently on scene

Update - 9:20 p.m.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service are no longer on scene in the area of Chapple Avenue and Albion Street.

Early Thursday evening, officers with Patrol Services, Investigation Services, the Emergency Services Unit, and the Canine Unit were called to the area following a report of a man in the area with a rifle.

Following a lengthy search, police did not locate anyone matching the description of the person and no firearms have been located.

Police did arrest one man in the area who was wanted in connection with an unrelated matter.

Update

At least one man has been taken into custody after police responded to the area of McNabb and Pine streets with weapons drawn.

The man was taken into custody by armed officers on McNabb Street near Campbell Avenue shortly before 6 p.m.

Police are still on scene as of 6:17 p.m.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is currently on scene in the Chapple Avenue and Albion Stteet area responding to a report of someone in the area with a firearm.

Police are asking anyone in the area "to shelter in place."

"If you’re able to, please go to your basement and avoid windows and doors," a release from police also said.

Citizens are asked to avoid the area.
