A person caught shoplifting last week pulled out a lighter and burned the hand of a store employee who confronted them, Sault Police say.

The incident occurred at around 4 p.m. on Oct. 27, at a business in the 200 block of Second Line West.

Police say when they arrived at the unnamed store, the suspect was already in custody of security personnel.

“Further investigation revealed when an employee confronted the accused for shoplifting, the accused burned their hand with a lighter in an attempt to get away,” says a news release issued by Sault Police. “They also pushed another employee.”

Ajanees Gingras, 36, is charged with robbery and assault with a weapon.

Gingras was released on an undertaking and is scheduled back in court on Dec. 18, 2023.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Gingras is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
