Suspect who fled Wellington East crash was driving stolen vehicle: Police

The accused was located and arrested on Monday

Sault Police have charged Roger Anderson with vehicle theft following a collision that occurred Saturday evening at the intersection of Wellington Street East and Pine Street.

A news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service states that the Toyota sedan the accused was driving was stolen.

Anderson fled the collision scene, but was located and arrested yesterday, police say.

Full text of the Sault Police release follows:  

On Jan. 25, 2021 officers with Patrol Services charged 53-year-old Roger Anderson with theft of a motor vehicle.

On Jan. 23, 2021 a GMC Truck was westbound on Wellington Street East and a Toyota sedan turned in front of the truck, and the two vehicles collided.

As a result of the collision, the truck struck a residence in the 1200 block of Wellington Street East. There was damage to the residence as a result of the collision. Both vehicles sustained significant damage.

No injuries were reported, however the driver of the Toyota sedan fled the scene. A canine track was conducted with negative results.

The investigation determined the vehicle was stolen and the accused was the driver of the sedan. He was located on Jan. 25, 2021 and arrested.

He is charged with theft of a motor vehicle, failure to stop after an accident, and driving without a licence. He is scheduled to appear in court on March 15, 2021.
