Two men were arrested yesterday afternoon when Sault police responded to a vehicle stopped at a green light on Lake Street — with a driver who “appeared to be unconscious.”

When officers arrived on scene at approximately 4 p.m., police say the driver “made several attempts to pull away” and “refused to comply with a bodily substances screening demand.”

A further search found both the driver and passenger to be in possession of one gram each of suspected fentanyl, police say.

The driver, 32-year-old Mark Shuttleworth, is charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired (Drug and/or Alcohol)
  • Failure or Refusal to Comply with Bodily Substance Screening Demand
  • Possession of Schedule I Substance
  • Resist Peace Officer

The passenger, 32-year-old Jonathan Briault-Dewar, is charged with:

  • Possession of Schedule I Substance
  • Breach of Probation

Both men were released on undertakings and are scheduled to appear back in court on Oct. 16, 2023.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and both are considered innocent unless proven guilty.
