Three charged after police seize drugs, stolen shotgun

Three people face numerous drug and weapon charges following the execution of a search warrant in the 100 block of Queen Street East yesterday.

In a news release issued today, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service states that officers seized a stolen 12-gauge shotgun, ammunition, and bear mace, as well as suspected cocaine, fentanyl, and methamphetamine.

On Jan. 27, 2021, officers with the Crime Suppression Unit, Drug Enforcement Unit, and the Emergency Services Unit charged 43-year-old Joseph Desrochers, 32 year-old Ashely Swanson, and a 17-year-old female with weapon and drug offences.

At 7:10 p.m., officers executed a search warrant at a residence in the 100 block of Queen Street East. Once inside, officers located the three accused and they were arrested. During a subsequent search of the area of arrest, officers located a 12-gauge shotgun which had been reported stolen, ammunition, bear mace, and a small quantity of suspected cocaine, fentanyl, and methamphetamine.

Mr. Desrochers is charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of property obtained by crime, two counts of careless storage of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of a firearm obtained by crime, and three counts of breach of recognizance. He was held for bail court.

Ms. Swanson is charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of property obtained by crime, two counts of careless storage of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of a firearm obtained by crime, obstructing a peace officer, and three counts of breach of recognizance. She was held for bail court.

The 17-year-old is charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of property obtained by crime, two counts of careless storage of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and possession of a firearm obtained by crime. They are scheduled to appear in court on March 16, 2021.
