Traffic stop leads to seizure of $38,820 worth of drugs

On Feb. 3, 2019 officers with the Patrol Services Division of The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested 33-year-old Mike McCourt of no fixed address for drug trafficking.

Just after 9 a.m. the accused was operating a motor vehicle on Gore Street near Albert Street East. Police were using the automated license plate reader (ALPR) and identified a vehicle that was passing by as having an owner with a suspended license.

Officers initiated a traffic stop and determined that the driver, Mr. McCourt was a suspended driver. When he was taken into custody, officers located a small amount of heroin in his possession. Officers then located a set of brass knuckles, 64.7 grams of fentanyl, and a small amount of cocaine in the vehicle. The total street value of the narcotics seized was $38,820.

He has been charged with:
    •    one count of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking,
    •    two counts of possession of a controlled substance, and;
    •    one count of possession of a prohibited weapon.

He was held for bail court.
