Sault Ste. Marie Police Service says a bicycle stolen from a cyclist fundraising for cancer research has been returned to its rightful owner.

A citizen notified police shortly before 9 a.m. that they had found an abandoned bicycle matching the description of the one stolen from Trek for Hope cyclist Stephen Dartt at the very east end of Bay Street near the waterfront.

The bicycle was recovered by officers and returned to the victim, says police spokesperson Lincoln Louttit.

“The initial report that we received was that a bicycle was stolen that did not have a seat on it, and then a seat from another bicycle was also taken,” said Louttit, speaking to SooToday Friday. “The bicycle was recovered, however, the seat has yet to be seen.”

Louttit thanked the public for its support.

“Obviously we’re thankful for the people of Sault Ste. Marie for keeping an eye out for this bicycle, and giving police a call when they located one that they believed matched the description, and we were happy to return to its owner.”
