Hit and Run Under Investigation

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance for a hit and run accident that occurred last night. Around 9:30 pm a 16-year old youth was walking on the sidewalk on Chambers Avenue when they crossed Elaine Court. The youth was struck by a pickup truck that was traveling on Elaine Court towards Chambers Avenue. The driver of the pickup truck failed to remain at the accident. The youth was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The only description of the pickup truck is that is was red, and was described as very high with a lift kit. Breach of a Release Document

22-year old Thomas Fields of 84 Smale Avenue will appear in bail court this morning after being arrested yesterday afternoon. It is alleged that officers came across Mr. Fields while he was in an intoxicated state in the downtown area. A police query revealed that the accused was on a release document with conditions not to consume alcohol. The accused has been charged with one count of breach of a release document.


Youth Turns Self In to Police

A 17-year old youth will also appear in bail court this morning. Yesterday afternoon the accused approached an officer in the City’s east end and turned themselves into the officer for an outstanding warrant. A query also revealed that the accused had failed to notify an address change as part of a release condition. The accused has been charged with 4 counts of breaching release documents.

Female Charged with Assault

A 22-year old female will appear in bail court this morning after getting into an altercation with family members. Police were called to a downtown residence yesterday afternoon. It is alleged that the accused assaulted 2 family members. It is alleged that the accused punched one victim and pulled that victim’s hair. The second victim was punched in the head; the accused tried to stab the victim with a steak knife, and had a chair a thrown at them breaking their pinky finger. Medical treatment was not sought at the time of the incident. It is alleged that the accused also threw the kitchen furniture around the residence. While being transported to the station the accused damaged the rear passenger door handle of a police cruiser. The accused has been charged with 2 counts of assault, 2 counts of mischief, one count of assault with a weapon and one count of assault causing bodily harm.

Pedestrain Struck Crossing Street

Yesterday around 12 noon a car at Elgin Street and Bay Street struck a pedestrian. 23-year old Wanda Parent of 21 Ferguson Avenue was walking westbound on Bay Street. She started to cross Elgin Street, with the right of way, when a car driven by 19-year old David Idehen of 854 Frontenac Street struck her. Ms Parent attended at the hospital on her own for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Charges have not been laid in this accident. The Traffic Services Sergeant will review the incident.

Reminder

In light of the 2 above motor vehicle collisions, pedestrians and motorists alike are being asked to be more observant. Drivers must stop at all stop signs completely, not roll through them. Keep an eye out for pedestrians especially at intersections and make sure you can proceed safely. Pedestrians are reminded to cross at intersections and pay attention to the traffic. Even though you may have the right of way, double check to make sure an approaching vehicle is going to stop before you stop off of the curb.
