OPERATION IMPACT ENFORCEMENT RESULTS

Officers with Patrol and Traffic Services of the Sault Ste Marie Police Service over the past long weekend participated in Operation Impact, a National campaign focusing on enforcement and education of the “Big 4”, impaired driving, occupant restraint use, and all aspects related to aggressive and distracted driving; the main causes of death and injury on Canadian Roadways.

The initiative which ran from the 5th to the 8th of October resulted in 29 persons in Sault Ste Marie being charged with traffic offences relating to the “Big 4”.  Charges laid this weekend included Fail to Wear Seatbelt, Speeding, and Following Too Close.

Also part of the weekend initiative was a RIDE check conducted on Saturday evening which involved 180 vehicles being checked with 3 traffic offences issued and 2 roadside checks, with both drivers passing.

With October being Seatbelt month, Officers will continue to conduct spot checks throughout the City and Prince Township to ensure drivers are using the proper restraint system for themselves and their passengers.  Drivers not found wearing their seatbelt will receive a $240 fine and the loss of 2 demerit points.

Stolen car driven into canal:

On the 6th of October at approximately 0750  hours police responded to a report that two males had driven a stolen vehicle into the west canal at the Sault Locks. Two males were identified in the area and further investigation has led to the arrest of one of the suspects. 

18 year old Christopher Lee Swanson of no fixed address as been arrested and charged with in possession of the stolen Pontiac Grand Am recovered in the canal.  In addition he is also bound by a valid probation order with the enforceable condition to keep the peace and be of good behavior, and reside in such a location that is approved by his probation officer, both of which were breached.   

A warrant for the arrest of the second suspect is pending.

Arrest:

38 year old Crystal Harvey of Gore St. was arrested at 0400 this morning at on a warrant for failing to appear in court on prostitution charges.
