Male Wanted on a Warrant

A 44-year old male was arrested last night just before 9 pm. Officers stopped and checked the male in the downtown area and a police query revealed that the accused was wanted on a warrant for one count of assault and one count of breach of probation. The incident the accused was wanted for stemmed from a domestic dispute involving a girlfriend in 2003. The male will appear in bail court this morning.

Youth Charged with Possession

A 15-year old youth was arrested yesterday over the noon hour after the youth was found to have a small quantity of marijuana in their possession. The ½ gram of marijuana has a street value of approximately $10. The accused was on a release document at the time of the incident with conditions not to be in possession of non-prescription drugs. The youth has been charged with one count of possession of a controlled drug or substance and one count of breach of a release order. The youth will appear in bail court this morning.

Impaired Driving Charges Laid

Just before 3 am this morning officers stopped a car on Woodward Avenue. When officers approached the driver of the car they noted that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. 40-year old Scott Carson of 21 Park Street, Thessalon has been charged with one count of impaired driving and count of consume over the legal limit. The accused will appear in court on October 17th.

Bear Sighting

Yesterday City Police received on call of a bear sighting in the area of Allens Side Road and Second Line East around 8 am. Around 6 am this morning City Transit advised that one of their drivers had seen a bear in the area of Queen Street East and Fournier Road.

Two Reports of Theft

City Police received 2 theft reports yesterday. A purse was stolen from a vehicle parked in the 100 block of Carufel Avenue. A propane tank was stolen from a residence in the 100 block of South Market.


Tips to Keep Kids Safe

Now that school is back in and life has become busier with schools projects, after school activities and new friends the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like share some safety tips with parents to help keep your children safe:

1) Children should check first with their parents or the person in charge of the before they go anywhere or get into a car, even with someone they know.

2) Children should check first with their parents or a trusted adult before accepting anything from anyone, including someone they know.

3) Children should know their name, address, and telephone number and parents name.

4) Take the time to show your child how to use 9-1-1 and talk about some of the time to use it.

5) Have your child take a friend with them when they go places or play outside.

6) Children need to know to say no if someone tries to touch them in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable, scared or confused.

7) Let your children know that they can tell you or a trusted adult if they feel scared, uncomfortable or confused.

8) Take the time out of your busy day to talk and actually listen to what your child is saying. Keeping lines of communication open with your child is the key to knowing what they are doing or are trying to tell you.

By talking to your children about some of the above safety tips you can help keep your child safe.
