The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would again like to remind the public of possible scams and to be report incidents that do not seem right.

Yesterday a senior citizen received a call from a male who advised he was from a major banking institute and that there was a problem with the senior’s account and that the male needed the potent ional victim’s help. The male directed the victim to remove a large amount of money from their account and to meet him in the downtown area. The victim was further directed not touch the money and to let the male handled it. Fortunately the potential victim had a conversation with a family member and soon realized that this was a scam. The victim had been directed to meet the male outside of a downtown shopping centre. The male wanted to know what the victim would be wearing and what they would be driving so that he could identify the victim. The patrol officer who received the complaint later in the day went to the shopping centre and spoke to several persons in the area and received a description of the suspected male. The suspect for this scam is described as a white male, in his 20’s, had short brown hair, was about 6 feet tall, wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans and was carrying an empty white plastic bag with no markings on it.

The public needs to be aware that no banking institute will call requesting that a customer make a cash withdrawal for an investigative purpose. It there is a problem with your account you would be directed to go to the branch you deal with. Also if you receive a call from anyone advising that they represent a banking institution and need your account number, do not give it to them. You bank will have your account number. The only time it is safe to give your bank account information over the phone is if you yourself have called the banking institution.If you are a victim of a scam, or if you receive a phone call similar to the incident above call and report the matter to the City Police at 949-6300.

Domestic Dispute

A 43-year old male will appear in bail court this morning. Just after midnight this morning the male was arrested after City Police attended at a downtown residence regarding a domestic dispute. The couple were involved in a verbal argument. A police query revealed that the male was on 2 probation orders each with a term to stay away from this ex-girlfriends residence, the female involved in this call. The male has been charged with 2 counts of breach of probation.

Male Charged with Breach of a Release Order

An 18-year old male will appear in bail court this morning after City Police attended a centrally located address regarding a drunken male. Upon arrival officers located the male outside of the address at 4:30 am this morning. The male was on a release order with conditions to be inside their residence. Through the course of their investigation officers also learned that the accused was on a Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) probation order with a curfew as well as terms to keep the peace and be good. The accused also had a condition on the release order not to consume any non-prescription drugs and had failed to abide by that condition. The male has been charged with 2 counts of breach of a release order and 2 counts of breach of probation. Due to the YCJA related charged the name of the accused cannot be released.


Male Tries to Start Fires

Shortly after 11:30 pm last night City police arrested Kyle Parnell of 3-1616 Wellington Street East. It is alleged that the male attended at Sir James Dunn School at 1601 Wellington Street East and starting lighting garbage cans on fire. Officers located the accused next to a burning garbage can and arrested him. The accused was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the offence. The accused has been charged with one count of mischief under $5,000 and will appear in court on September 12th.

Male Charged with Assault

A 29-year old male was arrested and charged with one count of assault yesterday morning. It is alleged that the accused assaulted his common-law girlfriend yesterday morning in their downtown residence by slamming the bedroom door on her, throwing her to the floor and then pushing her against the wall. The victim did not require medical treatment at the time. The male has been charged with one count of assault and will appear in court on September 7th.

Break and Enter

Just before 3:30 am this morning City Police attended at Soo Sports Excellence at 208 Queen Street East for a break and enter. Information received during the course of investigation the break and enter indicates that 2 males were responsible for this crime. Both males are described as being in their 20’s. One male is described as Caucasian, tall and very heavy set wearing a dark shirt and dark pants. The other male is described as Native Canadian, with dark hair and wearing white pants and runners. The second male is believed to have been carrying a jacket from the store. It is unknown at this time the exact description of the jacket taken or if anything else was taken.
