Cyclist taken to hospital after colliding with parked car

Yesterday afternoon just after 4:30 pm officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service attended in the 100 block of Wellington Street West for a motor vehicle collision involving a parked car and a cyclist.

A bike operated by a 17-year old youth was traveling westbound on Wellington Street West when the bike collided with a parked car. The cyclist was taken by ambulance to the Sault Area Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. At this time the cyclist is not being charged with any driving infractions.

Police Issue Policy Change in regards to Motor Vehicle Collisions

Effective immediately the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service will not be releasing personal information regarding drivers and persons involved in motor vehicle collisions.

This decision is in line with the majority of the police services across the province and complies with recent changes to the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

There are only two times the names of person involved in motor vehicle collisions will be released.

They are as follows:

1) when a driver is charged with criminal code related offence(s)

2) when a driver is killed as a result of a motor vehicle collision and the next of kin has been notified

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service will continue to release motor vehicle collisions with injuries.

Collision Involving Bike and Van

Yesterday afternoon just after 3 p.m. officers from traffic services attended at Wellington Street East and Nicholas Avenue for a motor vehicle collision involving a bicycle and a van.

A 16-year-old youth was operating a bicycle along the sidewalk on the north side of Wellington Street East.

A van operated by a 33-year-old male had stopped at the stop sign at Nicholas Avenue and was turning right onto Wellington Street East when the two vehicles collided.

The operator of the bicycle was taken by ambulance to the Sault Area Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation is continuing.

Break and Enters

Yesterday morning a break and enter was reported to Eastview School on Arizona Avenue.

It is unknown if anything was taken in the break and enter.

Yesterday afternoon around 12:30 p.m. thieves broke into a home on Parkinworth Place.

Entry was gained however nothing was taken.

Attempted Break and Enter

Yesterday around also around 12:30 p.m. a male between 19-25 years of age, with a pale complexion and short blonde hair attempted to break into a home on Kohler Street.

A witness in the area observed the suspect and when the witness called the police, the suspect fled from the area.

Entry was not gained into the residence.

Several Stolen Bicycles

Over the last several weeks City Police have received a number of calls of bicycles being stolen.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like to remind citizens to secure your bikes so that you do not become a victim of crime.

If you are storing your bike in a shed, ensure you lock the building.

If you are out in public, ensure that you lock your bike up with a good bike lock.

There are many to choose from and they can be bought at numerous businesses in town in a wide range of prices.

It is much cheaper to buy a lock for your bike than to replace your bike.

Keep in mind when you leave your bike in the garage, that you should be closing the garage door.

Many people are in the habit of leaving the garage door open while they are in the back yard or inside the home.

By leaving the door open you are advertising to a would be thief what you own.

If the opportunity is there and no one is around a would be thief is likely to take advantage of your property.
