Update to TD Canada Trust Bank Robbery & Canadian Bankers Associaton Offer Reward

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service, in partnership with the Canadian Bankers Association, is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the persons responsible for the robbery at the TD Canada Trust Bank located at 44 Great Northern Road in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

On Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at approximately 7:20 a.m. before the branch was open, two masked males entered the bank using a sledge hammer to shatter the locked, glass door.  One suspect was armed with a handgun and ordered the two employees to kneel on the floor.  The suspects left the branch within one minute and took a substantial amount of money, fleeing the scene in a vehicle that is believed to have been parked right in front of the bank.  Fortunately none of the staff were hurt during the robbery.

Both suspects are described as:  white males with balaclavas around their faces.  Both were wearing dark coloured gloves, blue jeans, and blue toques with a white pattern around them.

One male was wearing a blue and white plaid “hunter style” coat and the second male was wearing a gray winter jacket with black patches on the shoulders.

To assist with the investigation, the Canadian Bankers Association is offering a $25,000.00 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the persons responsible for this bank robbery.

“Fighting bank robberies and protecting our staff and customers is our number one priority, and our message is, if you rob a bank, you will get caught”, said Mal Chivers, Manager of Fraud and Security, Canadian Bankers Association.

Chief Davies added, “The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service continues to actively investigate this robbery.  We encourage anyone who has any information relating to this crime to call Sault Ste. Marie Police, 9-1-1 or Crime Stoppers.”

A stolen vehicle from Southern Ontario was used in this and was located a short distance away from the scene of the crime. Pictures are being released and anyone who may have seen the vehicle around the robbery date is asked to call the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service at 705-949-6300 ext 264.

Police Services across the Province of Ontario and the Canadian Bankers Association continually work together to solve bank robberies.

It appears that the suspects from the robbery in Sault Ste. Marie are also linked to a robbery at the TD Canada Trust on Hespeler Road in Cambridge, Ontario.  This robbery took place on July 4, 2013 and is currently under investigation by the Waterloo Regional Police Service.  There are similarities in the physical descriptions of the suspects and a stolen vehicle was also used.
